How This Calculator Works

This tool provides indicative pricing based on typical UK labour rates, material costs, and job complexity — use it as a starting point, not a final quote.

Job pricing for electrical work combines four elements: materials, labour, overheads, and profit. The calculator estimates each element based on the job type, regional variation, and scope of work you specify. Labour is calculated from a day rate divided across estimated hours, materials are estimated from typical wholesale costs with a standard markup, and overheads cover van costs, insurance, tool depreciation, and certification fees.

These estimates reflect average UK market rates and should be adjusted for your specific circumstances. Your actual costs, local competition, and the quality of finish you provide all affect what you can realistically charge.

Estimates Only — Not Financial Advice

This calculator provides rough pricing guidance based on industry averages. It is not a substitute for calculating your own costs and profit requirements. Every business has different overheads, tool costs, and efficiency levels. Use these figures as a sanity check, not a price list.

Practical Notes

Never Underquote to Win Work

Pricing below your true cost (labour + materials + overheads + profit) is unsustainable and damages the trade. Calculate your minimum acceptable day rate by adding up all your annual costs — van, fuel, insurance, tools, training, accountancy, holidays, sick pay provision — and dividing by your billable days (typically 220-230 per year). If a job does not cover this rate plus materials and profit, you are losing money.

Build in a Contingency

Allow 10-15% contingency on every quote for unforeseen work. Old properties regularly reveal problems once you lift floorboards or open up walls — undersized earth conductors, damaged cables, asbestos backing boards, or non-compliant previous work. A contingency protects your margin without requiring awkward conversations about extras mid-job. If you do not use it, the customer gets a pleasant surprise.

Material Costs Fluctuate

Copper prices directly affect cable costs, and these can vary significantly over a 12-month period. Do not hold quotes for more than 30 days without a materials price review clause. For large rewires or commercial projects, consider purchasing all cable and major components at the time of order acceptance to lock in the price.
