How This Calculator Works
This calculator sizes the cable for your cooker by applying the BS 7671 diversity formula, which significantly reduces the design current from the full load rating.
The full load current is calculated from the cooker's kW rating. Diversity is then applied using the IET On-Site Guide formula, which recognises that a cooker rarely operates all elements at full power simultaneously.
Ib = 10A + 0.30 x (Full Load - 10A) + 5A (if socket)- Ib
- = Diversified design current in amps
- Full Load
- = P / V -- total cooker watts / 230V
IET On-Site Guide, Table 1B
After diversity, ambient temperature correction (Ca) is applied, the cable is selected from Table 4D5, the MCB is coordinated with the cable capacity, and voltage drop is verified against the 5% limit.
Quick Reference -- Cooker Cable Sizes
Common cooker ratings and cable requirements (with socket, Method C)
IET On-Site Guide Table 1B| Cooker (kW) | Full Load (A) | Diversified (A) | Cable | MCB |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | 13.0 | 15.9 | 6mm² | 32A |
| 6 | 26.1 | 19.8 | 6mm² | 32A |
| 10 | 43.5 | 25.1 | 6mm² | 32A |
| 12 | 52.2 | 27.7 | 6mm² | 32A |
| 14 | 60.9 | 30.3 | 6mm² | 32A |
| 18 | 78.3 | 35.5 | 10mm² | 40A |
Diversified current includes 5A for CCU socket. Method C (clipped), 30\u00B0C ambient.
