How This Calculator Works
Automatic Disconnection of Supply (ADS) ensures protective devices clear faults within the time limits set by BS 7671.
The calculator compares the prospective fault current against the operating characteristics of the protective device. Fault current is derived from the earth fault loop impedance: If = 0.95 × U₀ / Zs. This value must exceed the device's instantaneous trip threshold to achieve disconnection within the required time.
If = 0.95 × U₀ / Zs- If
- = Prospective earth fault current (A)
- U₀
- = Nominal line-to-earth voltage (230V)
- Zs
- = Earth fault loop impedance (Ω)
- 0.95
- = Factor for voltage tolerance at origin

MCB Magnetic Trip Multiples
Instantaneous trip current ranges by MCB type
BS EN 60898| MCB Type | Trip Range (× In) | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| Type B | 3–5 | Domestic, resistive loads |
| Type C | 5–10 | Small motors, fluorescent lighting |
| Type D | 10–20 | Large motors, transformers, X-ray equipment |
The lower bound is the minimum current for guaranteed instantaneous trip.
